The Bradford Factor is calculated with this formula:

Score = Number of Occurrences2 X Total Days Absent

or...

Score = Number of Occurrences X Number of Occurrences X Total Days Absent

The score gives you an indication of how disruptive an employee's absences have been.

Your business can use the score the create 'Trigger points'. These are thresholds at which you may want to perform certain HR tasks, such as written warnings or dismissals. An example set of trigger points is below:

  • 0-20 - No Concern (no action needed)
  • 21-45 - Cause for concern (verbal warning)
  • 45-100 - Major concern (first written warning)
  • 100-800 - Disciplinary (second written warning)
  • 800+ - Dismissal
